"We all go through heartbreak and dark times. We lose people that meant the world to us, and it often feels like a sharp, pounding pain straight to the heart. To those of us struggling from mental illness, it can be a whole lot worse. We begin to think of every time we've felt like this and the pain multiplies. I made this piece at the height of a rough period of loss. One screw/nail is in the center of the heart for every year of my life, because I felt like my life had been a cacophony of pain year after year. I was in a very dark spot."
